And last year --2019-- Platinum marketed a variation of the well-known model Preppy called “Little Shooting Star”, but only for the Chinese market. This detail makes this pen poorly known in Japan –or anywhere else--, leaving Fudefan and Inky Rocks as the primary sources of information.
Preppy and Little Shooting Star side by side. The nib units and the sections are the same for both models.
On my side I can only formulate a couple of questions I cannot answer:
-- Is it worth to release this variation of the long-produced Preppy instead of marketing the Preppy itself in the Chinese market?
-- Is this sector of the market that profitable? Or, in other words, can Platinum really compete with the myriad of inexpensive pens made in China that are launched into the market almost every week?
This seems a difficult challenge for Platinum.

I'm not sure about the economics of a cheap Platinum pen, but what they did stumble upon is that so many of my friends in the States LOVE the nib! I'm thinking there is money to be made in inexpensive pens (or even expensive ones) with decorated nibs...
I must say that the decoration on the nib did not call my attention at all, but I might be just too old for that.
Now, you might be onto something re the money to be made with inexpensive pens, particularly among young users entering this world of fountain pens through colorful inks, as someone suggested in view of the public attending all those ink, paper, and pen shows in Tokyo and beyond.
Thanks for passing by and commenting.

Rumor goes that Platinum is cooperating with Hero to product fountain pen in China.
Thanks, Tefolium. Interesting move that of Platinum if the rumor was right.
Thanks again. Cheers,
